The rule of thumb most estheticians repeat — “every 4 to 6 weeks” — exists because that’s the natural cycle of skin cell turnover. But the right frequency for you depends on your skin type, your specific concerns, your home-care routine, and your goals. Here’s how I think about it across the different skin patterns I see most often in the studio.
Healthy, well-maintained skin
If your home-care routine is solid and you’re mostly looking to maintain glow, support barrier health, and prevent issues from developing, every 6 weeks is the sweet spot. This matches the natural epidermal turnover cycle for most adults — by the time we see you again, there’s a fresh layer of cells to work with.
Active acne or congestion
Every 3–4 weeks during the active treatment phase. The skin needs more frequent intervention to manage the inflammatory cycle, perform appropriate extractions, and adjust the treatment plan as the skin responds. Once the acne is controlled, we taper to every 6 weeks for maintenance.
Anti-aging and corrective focus
A monthly cadence works well when you’re doing structured corrective work — peels, microneedling series, or progressive resurfacing protocols. The treatments are spaced based on your individual recovery and how your skin responds, but monthly is a reasonable default.
Hyperpigmentation and melasma
Every 4 weeks during a structured peel series, then every 6 weeks for maintenance once pigmentation has stabilized. Consistency matters more than intensity here — pigmentation responds to gradual, repeated layering rather than a single aggressive treatment.
Sensitive or compromised barrier
Initially every 2–3 weeks for very gentle barrier-restoration treatments — short, focused sessions to rebuild without provoking. Once the barrier is calm, taper to every 6–8 weeks.
Pre-event timing
For weddings, photo shoots, or major events: book your treatment plan to land 1 week before the event, not the day of. New skin reactions occasionally appear in the 24–48 hours after a facial, and you don’t want to discover that the day of an event. A HydraFacial is the exception — it can be done within 24 hours of an event safely.
What to do between appointments
The single biggest predictor of how much your skin improves between facials is your home-care routine. The studio work is roughly 30% of the result; your daily routine is 70%. We send every client home with a personalized regimen because what happens at home determines what we can build on next time.
