Dermaplaning and microdermabrasion get lumped together because they both physically exfoliate the skin for an instant smooth, bright result. But they work very differently, and one may suit your skin far better than the other. Here is a straightforward comparison from a licensed esthetician.
How each one works
Dermaplaning uses a sterile, single-use surgical blade to gently shave away dead surface skin and the fine vellus hair (peach fuzz) on your face. Microdermabrasion uses a device — either fine crystals or a diamond tip — with suction to buff away the dead surface layer. Both are mechanical (physical) exfoliation, but dermaplaning also removes the peach fuzz, which microdermabrasion does not.
What each one is best for
Choose dermaplaning if you want to:
- Remove peach fuzz for a smooth, makeup-ready finish.
- Get instant softness and glow with zero downtime.
- Exfoliate gently — it is very well tolerated, including during pregnancy.
- Prep skin so serums and treatments absorb better.
Choose microdermabrasion if you want to:
- Target rough texture, mild congestion, and superficial pigmentation.
- Use the suction element to help decongest slightly.
- Resurface without removing facial hair.
Downtime, sensitivity, and results
Both are essentially no-downtime treatments — you may have mild pinkness for an hour or two. Dermaplaning is generally the gentler, calmer option and a favorite for sensitive skin and pregnancy (no chemicals or heat required). Microdermabrasion’s suction can be slightly more stimulating. Neither should be done on active, inflamed acne, as physical exfoliation can aggravate breakouts — in that case a peel or an acne facial is the better route.
The honest verdict
For most clients seeking that smooth, glowing, makeup-ready finish — especially with peach fuzz removal — dermaplaning is the standout, and it pairs beautifully before a HydraFacial or chemical peel. In the studio we most often recommend dermaplaning as an add-on for exactly this reason. If your primary concern is deeper texture or congestion, we will often reach for a customized peel instead. As always, the right call comes out of a quick skin analysis.
