How to Minimize Large Pores (What Works and What Doesn’t)

Large pores are one of the most common concerns I hear — and one of the most misunderstood. Here is the honest truth about what makes them smaller.

Let me start with the honest part, because it saves you money: you cannot permanently shrink your pores, and anything promising to "close" or "erase" them is overselling. Pore size is largely genetic. But — and this is the good news — you absolutely can make pores look dramatically smaller by keeping them clear and supporting your skin. Here is what actually works, from a licensed esthetician.

Why pores look larger

Pores appear bigger for a few reasons: they are clogged with oil and dead skin (which stretches them open), your skin produces a lot of oil, or collagen around the pore has weakened with age or sun damage so the pore loses its support. Notice that two of those three are things we can directly influence.

What actually minimizes pores

  1. Keep them clear. A clogged pore looks larger, so consistent exfoliation is the single biggest lever — especially salicylic acid (BHA), which gets inside the pore.
  2. Use a retinoid. Retinol boosts cell turnover and collagen, which visibly refines pore appearance over time.
  3. Cleanse and never sleep in makeup. Congestion is the fast track to stretched-looking pores.
  4. Wear daily SPF. Sun damage breaks down the collagen that keeps pores tight — protecting it keeps them looking smaller.
  5. Do not over-strip your skin. Harsh products trigger more oil, which makes pores worse, not better.

The professional treatments that help most

In-studio treatments accelerate what home care starts:

  • HydraFacial — the vortex extraction clears the congestion that makes pores look big, with instant results.
  • Chemical peels — salicylic and glycolic peels deep-clean and refine texture across a series.
  • Regular professional extractions — the safe way to clear stubborn blackheads that stretch pores.
  • Dermaplaning — smooths the surface so pores are less noticeable and products absorb better.

What does not work (skip these)

Ice water does not permanently close pores (it tightens temporarily, then they return). Pore strips only grab the surface plug and can irritate. And no cream "shrinks" pores for good. Save your money for consistent exfoliation, a retinoid, SPF, and periodic professional treatments — that combination genuinely refines how your pores look.

Common questions

No — pore size is largely genetic and cannot be permanently changed. But you can make pores look significantly smaller by keeping them clear with exfoliation (especially salicylic acid), using a retinoid, wearing daily SPF, and getting professional treatments like HydraFacials and chemical peels.
