It is the question every client asks at their first lash appointment: how long will these actually last? The honest answer is that a full set lasts the natural life cycle of your lashes — but how good they look along the way is mostly up to aftercare. Here is what to realistically expect, and exactly how to keep your set full for as long as possible.
The short answer
A full set of lash extensions lasts around four to six weeks — the length of your natural lash shedding cycle. Each extension is attached to one natural lash, and when that natural lash naturally sheds (you lose several a day, completely normally), the extension goes with it. Most clients book a fill every two to three weeks to replace what has shed and keep the set looking full, rather than waiting for a whole new set.
Why lashes shed faster for some people
If your extensions seem to disappear quickly, it is usually one of these:
- Your natural lash cycle — some people simply shed faster, and seasonal shedding is real.
- Getting them wet or steamy too soon after application (the adhesive needs time to fully cure).
- Oil-based products near the eyes, which break down lash adhesive.
- Rubbing, picking, or sleeping face-down on them.
- Not cleansing them — ironically, dirty lashes shed faster and can irritate the lash line.
Aftercare that actually makes them last
- For the first 24 hours, keep them dry — no steam, sweat, or water while the adhesive cures.
- Cleanse daily with a lash-safe foam cleanser and a soft brush. Clean lashes last longer and stay healthier.
- Avoid oil-based makeup, removers, and heavy creams around the eyes.
- Skip waterproof mascara — you should not need mascara at all, and removing it tugs extensions out.
- Brush them gently each morning with a clean spoolie to keep them neat.
- Sleep on your back or a silk pillowcase if you can, to avoid crushing them.
- Book fills every two to three weeks rather than letting the set thin out completely.
Do extensions damage your natural lashes?
Properly applied extensions — one lightweight extension per natural lash, sized to what your lash can support — do not damage your natural lashes. Damage comes from sets that are too heavy or from picking and rubbing. A certified lash artist keeps the weight safe, which is one more reason the person applying them matters as much as the products.
